JOB SUMMARY – 

Our client, a commercial poultry farm in Omagwa, Rivers State is hiring farmhands. The farmhand is responsible for carrying out the day-to-day manual and routine activities required for the successful operation of the poultry farm. This is a physically demanding role that requires energy, discipline, attention to detail, and a willingness to work as part of a team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND FUNCTIONS:

Poultry Care:

• Feed birds according to the established feeding programme.
• Ensure birds have continuous access to clean drinking water.
• Observe birds daily and report signs of illness, injury, unusual behaviour, or mortality to the farm supervisor.
• Assist in administering vaccines and medications under supervision.
• Help transfer birds between pens or houses when required.
• Remove dead birds promptly and dispose of them in accordance with farm biosecurity procedures.

Egg Collection and Handling:

• Collect eggs several times daily according to farm schedules.
• Sort eggs according to quality and condition.
• Clean eggs where necessary using approved procedures.
• Pack eggs carefully into trays and crates to minimise breakage.
• Transport eggs safely to the designated storage area.
• Report cracked, damaged, or abnormal eggs.

Cleaning and Sanitation:

• Clean poultry houses, pens, cages, and surrounding work areas.
• Wash and disinfect feeders, drinkers, egg trays, and equipment.
• Remove poultry manure and dispose of it as directed.
• Replace litter materials where applicable.
• Sweep and maintain cleanliness around feed stores, walkways, and operational areas.
• Assist in maintaining strict farm hygiene and sanitation standards.

Feed and Water Management:

• Carry feed from storage to poultry houses.
• Fill feeders according to farm procedures.
• Refill drinkers and ensure water systems function properly.
• Clean water containers and drinkers regularly.
• Assist in receiving, offloading, stacking, and storing feed deliveries.

Farm Maintenance:

• Assist with routine maintenance of poultry houses and equipment.
• Clean drainage systems and farm surroundings.
• Cut grass and clear weeds around poultry houses and buildings.
• Assist in simple repair and maintenance tasks as directed.
• Keep work tools clean and properly stored after use.

Biosecurity and Safety:

• Follow all farm biosecurity procedures.
• Wear designated protective clothing and equipment.
• Disinfect footwear and equipment when entering or leaving poultry houses.
• Restrict unauthorised access to poultry areas.
• Immediately report any disease outbreak or unusual farm condition.
• Follow all workplace health and safety guidelines.

General Farm Duties:

• Load and unload birds, feed, eggs, and farm supplies.
• Assist during bird vaccination, weighing, grading, and stock-taking exercises.
• Help prepare poultry houses for new batches of birds.
• Participate in periodic farm sanitation exercises.
• Carry out any other lawful farm duties assigned by the farm supervisor or farm manager.

WHAT YOU NEED TO GET THE JOB: 

• No formal educational qualification is required for this position.
• Success in this role depends more on character, attitude, physical ability, and willingness to learn than on academic qualifications.

• Be physically fit and able to perform manual labour.
• Be willing to live and work on the farm premises.

LIFESTYLE EXPECTATIONS:

To maintain a safe, healthy, and disciplined work environment:

• Smoking is not permitted within the farm premises.
• Habitual or excessive consumption of alcohol is not permitted.
• Employees are expected to report to work sober, alert, and fit for duty at all times.
• Employees must comply with all farm rules relating to health, safety, biosecurity, and conduct.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires a high level of physical stamina. Applicants should be able to:

• Stand and walk for long periods.
• Lift and carry bags of feed, crates of eggs, and other moderate loads safely.
• Bend, squat, climb, and perform repetitive physical tasks.
• Work in poultry houses with exposure to dust, feathers, odours, and varying temperatures.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

• This is a full-time live-in position.
• Successful candidates will reside on the farm premises throughout their employment. 
• The farm provides permanent accommodation for the duration of employment.
• The farm operates year-round because poultry production requires continuous attention. Staff therefore live on-site to enable prompt response to operational needs, emergencies, and routine farm activities.
• Employees prepare their own meals, while the farm provides a secure working environment and access to clean water.
• Rather than operating a fixed weekly day-off schedule, the farm manages time off through an approved relief-and-leave arrangement. Employees may apply for time away from work, and requests are considered based on operational requirements and the availability of suitable cover. This system recognises the continuous nature of poultry farming while ensuring staff have opportunities for rest and personal commitments.
